A nice little job on a cold winters day is to go into the greenhouse, sliding shut the door and getting stuck into some seed work.

If you want some early season bedding, January is the time to start work. Particularly good for May colour is some varieties of Sweet Peas and Lupins.

Sweet Peas

Sweet Peas

Sweet Peas will germinate in around 3 weeks if kept warm now. They can be planted out in spring with flowers from May. Sweet Peas are good to continue to plant all the way through to late Autumn for early summer colour.

Again, Lupins can be sown in the greenhouse now, or straight out from spring. Some varieties will flower from May onwards. Be aware though that some varieites do not flower in the first year, especially when sown outdoors in spring onwards.

There is always jobs to be getting onwards. It’s just a couple of weeks until February and then before we know it March is here.
